Ogoh-Ogoh Singaraja

Ogoh-Ogoh always made in the form of frightening, because it is a symbol of the Black Spirit or Black Magic.  However, sometimes in the form of cute and inviting laughter. In  the celebration of Nyepi 2014, young children around the street of Dewi Sartika Singaraja implement ogoh-ogoh parade together. The implementation was on the day before Nyepi. Those who live in the village of Kampung  Anyar  and Kaliuntu collaborate to carry out a longmarch parade.  Atmosphere of well familiarity and fraternity are raised.

According to Wikipedia, the main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings (especially humans). The forms of Ogoh-ogoh represent the Bhuta-Kala (Bhuta: eternal energy, Kala: eternal time), according to Hindu teachings. The imperceptible potentials of nature cannot be thoroughly explored by anyone. Philosophically, civilized men are required to manage the natural resources without damaging the environment itself.

Aside from being the symbol of Bhuta-Kala, Ogoh-ogoh is considered a symbol of modes of nature that form the malicious characters of living beings. Ogoh-ogoh are usually made by the group of artists found in villages around Bali. After being paraded on a convoy around the town, finally it is burnt to ashes in a cemetery as a symbol of self-purification.

In other places, and nearly every in every village around Bali, the children make their ogoh-ogoh, to be paraded around the village. This raises a festive atmosphere. The parade usually ends at the cemetery   where the said ogoh-ogoh, as a symbol of the black spirit, later on to be destroyed by firing them. The next day people carry out Catur Berata Penyepian  with silence.
